Marketing myself or How to avoid common mistakes at the start of your web presence - Part 7 / Social Media

In today's age of unimaginable speed and endless information, a photographer must be flexible in every adjustment needed to keep up with those speeds.

A few years ago this meant the transition from traditional film to digital cameras and computers.

A little later was learning to use the internet properly and even more so the use  of blogs and finally social media. At the same time, in this whole storm of new things, the photographer had to learn and become familiar with new terms, such as "google", "wikipedia", "yahoo", "msn", "Skype", "ftp" and technical terminology , like "megapixels", "CMOS", "scanning", "tagging", "full frame" and so many others, that I would need a small book, just to mention them.

The latest technology has come to the forefront of the general term "Social Media". The ultimate marketing, promotion and advertising tool in recent years for everyone, from the small neighbourhood business and the local small bar, to all the giant product companies and all the great artists around the world. Of course, photographers could not be an exception.

The social media photographer has so many ways to choose how she/he will promote her/his work; Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin, Ello, Visura, Tumblr, you name it.

My range of presence in the wonderful new world is limited (…) to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram. Some of them are pre-existing personal accounts that changed to fit my professional profile and others started from scratch, as part of the new rebranding. My pages on Social Media are all governed by the same logic: their purpose is to push the visitor to go to my site and blog. I don’t want these pages to be virtual galleries, just the first step in navigating the other pages of my work. So, the only photos I actually present regularly are these in my posts from Instagram and in new posts through my blog.

Needless to say, you are more than welcome to visit my pages: FB, Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram.
